Like a snow flake on the tallest peaks starts the largest of avalanches, so to the first soap sale begins something.
I met a woman named Florence. The first time she came over to our house, it was just before Christmas. I think she gave us some mango's so in return i gave her a bottle of liquid soap that i had made. She was happy to receive it, but when she heard that i made it myself she was very very interested. Well, yesterday she came over and we made soap together (the entire process takes about 2 hours) We made an agreement that i would give her 10 of the 13 bottles and once she had sold them, she would pay me back the capital. I told her i could give her the money for free, but she doesn't need free money, she needs business. As she was leaving, with her business in a bag, as she called it, she made her first sale to the ladies that work at the rock quarry just off of our driveway. Oh, and by rock quarry i mean that there is a hill with some rock, and 2 women with hammers that make an incredible amount of smaller rocks in a week. But back to soap, Florence, my first real soap lady, made her first sale. 538 Uganda Shillings to make and she sold it for 1000 Shillings. Is that pretty good? Florence seems to think so. Considering that a monthly salary of 60,000 is what alot of people make here, or 2000 a day, i think this will work out to be pretty good.
On the creating business and employment side, we have hired a house lady. I seem to remember at one time talking about how terrible it is that missionaries would hire someone to do stuff that they were too busy to do. I guess i am eating my words yet again. (I remember at one time saying that i would never be a roofer) Her name is Frieda, and she is great. For an “average” salary, she does dishes, sweeps the house, cooks lunch, does laundry and she even made our bed like it was a fancy hotel. She just finished teachers college and is waiting to get her marks back. One of the other really cool things is that I am starting to teach her how to use a computer. She said that in her class there were 100 students but the computer lab had only 10 computers. So basically we are starting from the beginning. I never realized that using a mouse is actually a skill that needs to be learnt and mastered. Anyways, it is going great. I am going to focus on word and email mostly. I am hoping that before we are done we will have a resume and some serious skills with Wordart.
Sarah made some awesome peanut butter cookies in out toaster oven. She is not to impressed because she had to do them 6 at a time.
Me and some kid, she is helping me with the laundry, sorta.
The neighbor kids were going crazy over the happy new years cake.
Me and Fridah, computer lessons.
Me and Francis, makin soap.
Sarah grew a little something extra this time. Hopefully it does not invade our house and consume everything in its path.
Nice work on the soap business. :-)
