Tenwek Hospital

Hello again. We are back from Tenwek and are in Nairobi for another 12 Hrs, and then we are off to Gangani. So let me tell you a little bit of what has happened. But first, we are currently well fed, not to tired, having lots of fun, and doing good. Parents, you can sigh with relief. And although we were at a hospital, we were not being treated, we were helping there outreach program. The hospital started way back in a few mud huts and now it is a full on facility with its on hydro-electric dam. For real, it is quite the setup. Anyways, about 15 years ago the hospital though that they should start a preventative arm of there ministry. This is where we were helping. Sarah with the BSF and when they heard i was into soap making, i had to teach them to. So, rather exciting. In the areas that have BSF filters there have been no cases of typhoid. However, in the last 5 months the hospital has had 570 out patents (those who received treatment but were released the same day) 75 in patients (those requiring surgery) and 12 deaths from typhoid only. We went to some of the homes that received BSF's to see how things were going, and one guy said "without BSF, no life" So it has been a really rich time. I think the pictures will explain a lot.

Here is the first homestead we went to. Pictures cannot show how truly clean these mud huts are. I have not yet had anyone explain how they keep a dirt floor clean, as in cleaner than your average western home with hard wood floors. You will have to come to see for yourself.

The man in the middle is the owner of the house in the picture above, his mother is to the left and his brother in on the right. You can see the BSF behind him.

We gave the man of the house to take a picture of us. He has never used a camera before. I think he did quite well for his first photo ever. We are enjoying millet porridge. It was great. The man to our left is the program manager for the BSF program in Tenwek.

Sarah and her babies...

This is the soil that they have to work with. This gives a whole new meaning to rocky soil.

This is... sigh...normal...
