We have had lots of exciting things happen lately. The chess society now has 2 unofficial members. The first person is a kid named Moses. He lives just down the road. Basically, he just walked into our house, saw the chess board and asked what it was. I told him to which he replied, teach me. So, member # 1. He is catching on quite quickly. I still haven’t got anything “official” but I think if you wait a little while, there might even be t-shirts.
So Moses has a sister. She came over the second time, so Sarah decided to make a chocolate cake with her. Before the cake had cooled however, Moses and his sister had to go home, so Natasha didn’t get to try any of the cake she had worked at making, I will get back to that later. As Moses and his sister were heading out the door, Moses asked, “will you escort us home?”. I said, uhhh, sure. I was thinking, I can’t let a kid and his little sister walk home in the dark, that is dangerous. Now let me assure you that Kamwenge is very safe, but I don’t think that anyone wants to walk in the dark anywhere. So, his house that is “just over there” was a 5 minute walk down a single track road just wide enough for a car with 4 foot tall grass on either side. So I was a little sketched out on the walk there, but there was a boy and his little sister to protect me from anything that could come out of the bush. We arrived at his house and thankfully he didn’t offer me any tea because I started thinking that Sarah is probably more worried than me. I hurriedly said my hello’s and goodbye’s and then headed off. Well, now I didn’t have my protection. Hmmm. I started jogging at a moderate rate. After a few minutes of jogging my heart rate was sufficiently high (maybe about 190) and I came to a fork in the road. A FORK?!? I don’t remember a fork in the road. Let me just say that jogging on gravel in flip flops is not too easy. After I clearly knew that I took the wrong fork and my heart rate was somewhere around a cocaine addicts, I saw our house. I could also see Sarah on the porch. Apparently she was using all of her Pilate’s meditation techniques to keep calm. For real it is safe here, but it is really dark at night. No, like it is dark at night. Ok, so we over reacted a little.
Back to Chocolate cake. The next day Moses and his sister came over, and we had chocolate cake. The bottom line is she didn’t like it. This is a completely normal 12 year old girl. She is a little shy, smiles lots, like to play, but she doesn’t like cake. Weird.
